MOSSELBAAI, TUINROETE. – Mosselbaai-munisipaliteit het ‘n verkorte video deur die publiek van die stormvloed wat die dorp en omgewing Saterdag 16 September 2023 tydens hooggety getref het en skade aangerig het, gedeel. Hulle plasing kom egter met ‘n waarskuwing.
Die munisipaliteit het sedert die stormvloed 26 strande gemonitor waarvan die totale skade nog bepaal moet word, vas te stel. Skoonmaakaksies sal Maandag 18 September begin.
Vir die publiek se veiligheid bly Danabaai se Eerste- en Tweede-strande, Glentana, asook Kusweg wat Reebok en Tergniet insluit, gesluit. Diasstrand en Kleinbrak het ook skade opgedoen.
Die publiek word gewaarsku om van die strande weg te bly. Die hooggety wat gister 7 meter hoog was, sal vandag omstreeks 16:49 ‘n hoogte van 4.5 meter bereik.

The Mossel Bay Municipality monitored several beaches throughout the night where damage was caused by a storm surge yesterday afternoon, 16 September. Damage risk assessment started at first light this morning across the municipal area, which includes 26 beaches. The damage risk assessment is still underway, and it has thus far been established that substantial damage has been caused to access points at several beaches. Mop up operations will commence tomorrow, 18 September. Damage to private property in close vicinity to the ocean has also been noted.

The municipal environmental team has reported superficial damage to beaches including Dias and Klein Brak, which includes the toe of vegetative dunes all along the coast being removed to some degree. In general, sand and debris have been washed onto some parking areas and roads in close proximity to the ocean. Members of the public are advised, requested and reminded to stay clear of areas affected by the storm surge. It is expected, according to the Department of Water Affairs model that wave heights of approximately 4.5m will be prevalent at high tide this afternoon (16:49), which is significantly lower than yesterday which was 7m.
