Kristen Govender (15) is in die intensiewesorgeenheid in Umhlanga-hospitaal nadat haar hare op 28 Desember 2022 in ‘n renstel (go-kart) by Gateway Mall vasgesit het.
Sy het spinale kneusing, ‘n geskeurde aorta en kopvel en sy kan van haar onderlyf af nie beweeg nie, nadat haar hare in die go-kart verstrengel geraak het.
Vernon Govender, haar pa, het verduidelik dat haar hare in ‘n poniestert was en dat sy ‘n veiligheidshelm aangehad het. Haar familie was by haar toe die voorval plaasgevind het, maar sy is deur omstanders gehelp totdat nooddienste opgedaag het.
Sy word tans medies behandel en haar pa sê die dokters wil nie te vinnig op operasies besluit nie, aangesien sy nog jonk is.
Die familie fokus om haar beter te kry sodat sy uit die hospitaal kan loop en weer kan skoolgaan.

Good day
Last week my 15 year old was partially scalped and she experienced many other injuries including spinal and internal injuries after hair got tangled in a go-cart at the Gateway shopping mall. She is current in ICU at Umhlanga hospital.
Please be advised that :
- The go karts are not as safe as the ones in Cornubia Mall and and may lack some safety measures.
- The go-kart/ Gateway staff were not helpfull and did not render any first aid or medical assistance. The management of Gateway distanced themselves from the incident. Stating that it’s the tenants responsibility to have first aid available. As for the cold hearted tenant/owner of the go-cart facility and the staff disappeard from the scene of the incident.
- Eyewitness said that there have been similar incident/s at this place.
- There was no easy acess avalible to paramedics to get to the incident
- 5 minutes after my child was rushed to hospital the go-cart track was open and resumed as if nothing had happened while my child’s blood and hair was on the track
This intelligent, loving child with big dreams now lies immobile in ICU in hospital. Perhaps some media exposure and investigation is required to warn people of the dangers and perhaps it could result in more safety precautions being taken. It could save a childs life.
