Inspector Lee Spencer Bryant helped a woman give birth on a pavement on West Street in Durban on Monday. Bryant, a metro police officer who has served for more than 16 years, has helped the woman give birth to a baby girl. This was not the first time Bryant helped a woman giving birth.
“Central patrols had come across the young lady in distress of early labour and an ambulance was requested. Metro Police Search and Rescue were called in to stabilise the patient. On arrival the patient was clearly in distress and delivering was imminent. “I had very little time to even prepare a safe semi sterile environment and had to improvise as the baby’s head appeared rapidly,” said Bryant.

Both the mother and the baby were declared healthy and were taken to hospital. Bryant is not new to this, as he assisted with a total of 10 babies within his 16 years of service. “Bringing life into the world is such a beautiful experience in comparison to where policemen only see blood and gore on duty. And in search and rescue we only see the worst of the worst, so it gives me as a police medic a sense of pride that I performed a living rescue which is what I aspire to do every day on duty,” he said.
