Van Reenenspas is tans vir verkeer gesluit nadat ‘n groot groep gewapende booswigte glo Saterdagaand 8 Julie 2023 omstreeks 22:00 vragmotors aan die brand gesteek het.
Volgens die SAPD is ses vragmotorbestuurders na bewering gedwing om hul vragmotors te stop, waarna dit aan die brand gesteek is.
Die ses brandende vragmotors het veroorsaak dat die pas vir verkeer gesluit word. Geen beserings is opgedoen nie en die motief vir die insident is onbekend.
Speurders van Van Reenen ondersoek ‘n saak van opsetlike saakbeskadiging. ‘n Groot polisieteenwoordigheid, wat OOP insluit, is tans in die pas om die situasie te monitor.

UPDATE AND COMMENT ON VAN REENEN’S TRUCK ATTACKS
July 9th- 03h15: FleetWatch has spoken to a senior traffic official on the scene and it has been confirmed that a total of six trucks have been burnt to destruction. The one truck has numerous bullet holes in the cab from the attackers shooting at it. The scene, however, has been fully secured by the law enforcement and concentration is now on removing the destroyed wrecks once the fires have been fully doused, cleaning the debris from the road and getting the road opened in the shortest possible time. However, that is going to take some hours. From FleetWatch’s perspective after talking to various people on the scene, this was a well-planned attack on trucks. They planned the ambush, got the trucks to stop by spreading some debris and rocks across the road, shooting at them and then burning them before gapping it. This was not a mass protest by a crowd of people. It was not a service delivery type protest. This was a ‘hit-squad.’ No banners or letters of demand were left so who? And what for? We can all speculate but won’t know for sure unless the attackers are apprehended by the police. But whatever their point or issue may be, this is not the way to get it across. This is BS! All that this will achieve for them is to attract scorn and condemnation rather than any empathy or understanding to whatever their cause or gripe may be. Millions of Rands have been lost via the destruction of six formerly productive trucks – and on some of them, the goods they were hauling. Add to this the money lost to the economy through the forced closure for hours of one of South Africa’s most critical transport routes where hundreds of trucks are affected with delays in collections and deliveries. Trucks truly are the wheels of the economy and tonight, those wheels have come to a halt. To give an idea of the destruction wrought on the industry on Van Reenen’s Pass tonight, have a look at the photographs of the havoc and destruction. They were taken (and are used here with the permission of Joey Govender) by one of the members of Joeys Towing who had been on hand to clear the road once the truck fires subsided. It’s sad. It’s all so sad. The only good news in this whole saga is that none of the drivers were killed or injured. Everything else is bad news.
