Twee persone het seergekry in ‘n botsing wat deur die elektrisiteitskabels, wat laag oor die N4 Hoofweg gehang het, veroorsaak is. Pro Med was op die toneel.
Die Stad Tshwane werk sedertdien onverpoosd om die situasie te beredder.
Cilliers Brink, burgemeester van Tshwane, was Sondag op die toneel en het met inwoners gekommunikeer. Hy het genoem dat die hulp van Eskom ingeroep word om te help.
Die burgemeester het wel duidelik gemaak daar kan nie gesê word wanneer die probleem herstel sal wees nie.

Key Deliverables in N4 Pylon Collapse Restoration –

Last night, 9 April 2023, 7 City of Tshwane electricity pylons collapsed, which caused 132kv powerlines to fall onto the N4 freeway.
This has resulted in a widespread power outage in large parts of Pretoria East and North.
Earlier today I was onsite with our City of Tshwane electricity teams who are currently assessing the extent of the damage and potential repair options, both for the line as a whole and parts of the network where back-feeding of electricity might be possible to restore earlier.
This is a major incident, and I would like to provide significant detail.
Background: Njala is one of the main infeed substations from Eskom into the City of Tshwane.
Last night a section of Njala tripped due to a series of high-voltage pylons that collapsed. This line takes power from Njala to various different substations, from the substations to minisubs and ultimately into your home.
Work Completed:
- Clearing the lines over the N4 highway and on Solomon Mhlangu Road.
- Secondary testing at the various substations to ensure that any problems that might have occurred in the substations are fixed as soon as the feeder line is fixed to avoid delays. Diagnostics and next steps :
- The Wapadrand Substation (sub) has a feeder cable fault between Njala and Wapadrand (Teams are busy organising resources to resolve this)
- Our team have tested the Mooikloof Sub and it is clean.
- Currently our teams are busy at Pumlani Sub.
- Subs to still be tested: Koedoespoort, Watloo, Heather’s and all subs in Mamelodi.
Now that the feeder cable has been cleared over the highway, teams can start isolating the cables and seeing which of the substations they can bring back online.
Due to load capacity, it is not clear which subs can be brought back online while they are working.
It will be possible to bring some of them back, but this we will only be able to know once both testing in the subs and isolation of all the cables is done. Road Ahead: This work needs to be done systematically and therefore timelines are not available yet.
Teams are working at full capacity and will give information as it becomes available. Currently, we have 5 key deliverables as part of this restoration: - Unblocking the N4 highway: Our first deliverable was the reopening the N4 highway. This required us to remove the cables from the road, allowing the return of traffic, both regular as well as the repair teams who need to move freely to restore electricity.
- Engagement with Eskom: The City Manager is engaging with Eskom to see what expertise and resources are available to assist the City of Tshwane with rebuilding the grid. The damage does is serious and at least partially appears to be the work of criminals. We need to reach out for support to ensure our network is restored as soon as possible.
- Deployment of TMPD: The Acting Chief of Policy in the City of Tshwane is deploying TMPD resources to ensure no further criminality occurs to the electricity network, to prevent further damage and delays on restoration.
- Attempt to back-feed electricity: Although the damage done to our network by this collapse is serious, the design of the electricity network allows for the possibility of back-feeding electricity from other substations to parts of the affected area.
Our technical teams are exploring whether isolation of the damaged parts of the network can occur to allow restoration of some areas sooner. However, this is only possible where our network technically allows for it, which is going to be a minority of the affected network. 5. Communicating project plan in terms of restoration milestones: Critically, once we know the full extent of the damage, and have engaged with Eskom, we will be in a position to put together a project plan to repair and restore the network.
We understand an estimated time of repair (ETR) is the main interest of the public. Unfortunately, there is no credible ETR at this time. As soon as possible we will communicate the project plan with the required work needed to restore power.
