Die Sizwe Kupelo-organisasie het gister in ‘n mediaverklaring aangekondig dat hulle op 14 Desember hul petisie aan die nasionale regering oorhandig het.
Die petisie is geloods om die pitbull-honderas as huishoudelike troeteldiere te verban.
Momentum vir handtekeninge is verkry na aanvalle deur hierdie honderas die afgelope maande die nuus oorheers het. Die organisasie het na twee maande 135 000 handtekeninge ter ondersteuning vir die petisie gekry.
Die plan was om die petisie self aan minister Thoko Didiza te oorhandig, maar dr. Sizwe Kupelo het dit aanlyn ingedien. Kupelo het gesê dat hy deur die ondersteuning oorweldig is en dat die bal nou in die hande van die regering is.
“Now, South Africans have spoken and the message is loud and clear: bn pit bulls now to prevent more unnecessary deaths. This is what active citizenry is all about.”
Ander lande soos Rusland, Finland, Denemarke, die Verenigde Koningkryk, Portugal en gedeeltes van Duitsland, China, Brasilië en Australië het reeds die ras verban of beperkinge op die eienaarskap van die honderas gesit.

SIZWE KUPELO FOUNDATION HANDS OVER BAN PIT BULLS PETITION
After two months and almost 135,000 signatures later, the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation has submitted the petition calling for the ban of pit bulls as domestic pets, to national government.
Though the foundation had wanted to hand over the petition to Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza, in person, patron and founder Dr Sizwe Kupelo submitted it online.
This was after weeks of waiting to get a date for the handover from the minister’s office.
The petition was handed over yesterday, the 14th of December 2022.
Kupelo said he was overwhelmed by the support from South Africans.
“When we made the call, we were not expecting the amount of response but this just shows that ours was a right call and campaign.
“Now, South Africans have spoken and the message is loud and clear: ban pit bulls now to prevent more unnecessary deaths. This is what active citizenry is all about.
“We, the people have done our part and now the ball is in our government’s court now. We hope that the voices of the thousands of people will be heard.”
The foundation made the call following 10-year-old Storm Nuku being mauled to death by the violent pit bulls at the end of September in Gqeberha.
Since then, there have been vicious and unprovoked attacks that claimed the lives of at least three people — including children in the Free State and Eastern Cape.
The call to ban pit bulls in South Africa comes as other countries like Russia, Finland, Denmark, United Kingdom, Portugal, parts of Germany, parts of China, parts of Brazil and parts of Australia, among a host of countries have either banned, put restrictions on ownership of the breed or its importation.
Kupelo urged Didiza to ensure the petition was taken to President Cyril Ramaphosa and Cabinet for discussion and the National Assembly for action.
“We want to thank every man and woman who signed the petition. We want to also thank organisations that threw their weight behind the campaign. We want to thank those pit bull owners who handed over their dogs to the SPCA.
“This shows that South Africans are a caring people as we want to prevent the further slaughter of our children by hopefully putting pressure on the people we elected to take decisive action and ban the wild animals living among people.
“Though we have submitted the petition, we urge people to continue signing it. We can no longer sit back and watch the future generation being slaughtered right before our eyes,” he said.
Throughout the campaign, pit bull lovers have hurled insults with some demonstrating total disregard for human lives.
In fact, others like the vile excuse of a human being, Belinda Magor, showed their true colours — they value animals over those of the human race.
