Cele promisies to provide Kliptown police station with resources to help reduce the tension in Soweto

Police Minister Beki Cele has promised to provide Kliptown police station with resources to deal with the tension that is running high between Pimville residents and Chicken Farm informal settlement in Kliptown.

Cele visited the police station following the death of Kgomotso Diale, a member of Operation Dudula, who was shot and killed on Monday near Chicken Farm informal settlement. Diale was a father of two and was part of the group which marched to Kliptown.

The community of Pimville had been struggling with cable theft and had no electricity for the past couple of days.

On Easter Monday some community members along with members of Operation Dudula accompanied Eskom workers to the side where they were working to replace the stolen cable. An altercation erupted when the Pimville residents arrived at the Chicken Farm informal settlement with their presence not being welcome.

It is alleged that another group of people who are believed to be residents of Chicken Farm and fired shots at the crowd. Diale was shot and killed in the incident with four others injured.

Cele visited Diale’s home and addressed the community members. The minister promised that 10 police vehicles would be issued to the police to patrol the area. Thabang Moloi, a Pimville community leader, said, “Our problem is that we have had an issue with cable theft for the last three years. We were shot at until our brother was killed, and others were injured.

“Me Cele, we don’t want those shacks there anymore. They must be demolished. We aren’t asking for people to be arrested. We want those shacks removed. We went to them as a community, ad after what happened, I am still in shock,” said Moloi.
