The University of South Africa (Unisa) has announced that in-person graduations resumed on Tuesday in Pretoria. Graduations will also be held at the University’s regional bubs in Durban, Cape Town, Mbombela, Polokwane, East London and Bloemfontein.
The ceremonies will run from now until 23 June. Unisa said having graduations in-person as opposed to having the ceremonies virtually is proof that things are getting back to normal again. “We are proud to announce that the University chancellor, former president Thabo Mbeki, will be available to confer qualifications on graduates on Wednesday and Thursday,” said professor LenkaBula, the principal and vice-chancellor at Unisa.

Graduations in-person were postponed when the Covid-19 outbreak began. Many lives were lost and many people who were infected ended up hospitalised. This is the reason why the university decided to host virtual graduations. Students were sent a message on their phones informing them when they can collect their certificates.
“University graduations are very important and sacred ceremonies. They represent a pinnacle of hard work that students and academics have put over the years. As a university, we take pride in this sacred tradition that seeks to honour, recognise and reward hard work, academic success, and excellence,” said professor LenkBula.”
Universities in Cape Town began having their graduations from Monday. These celebrations were halted during the outbreak of Covid-19.
