The South African government has taken a decision to be “neutral” and has asked South Africans not to pick sides in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Candith Mashego-Dlamini, the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), made this call during a parliament sitting which discussed the impact of the Russian invasion on South Africa’s economy on Tuesday.
“As the government of South Africa, we urge all South Africans not to take sides in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as this could go against our principles. In addition, South Africa has good bilateral relations with both countries,” said Mashego.
The request to debate the matter was brought by the Democratic Alliance (DA) last week following South Africa’s decision to abstain in the United Nations General Assembly Resolution which called for the end of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces. Among the BRICS nations only Brazil voted in support of the motion while China, India and South Africa chose to abstain from.

South Africa was among the 35 countries which chose to abstain in the vote. John Steenhuisen, the leader of the DA, criticised the decision which was taken by government and said this move puts South Africa on the wrong side of history.
David Masondo, the Deputy Finance Minister, acknowledged that the invasion in Ukraine had an impact on the South African economy. He said there has been a sharp increase in the prices of oil, sunflower oil, maize and wheat caused by the disruption in supply. The price of fuel has also increased.
