An American journalist working in Ukraine was shot and killed with another one wounded by Russian troops in the town of Irpin outside the city of Kyiv. The incident happened on Sunday as they were travelling to film refugees, police said.
Brent Renaud, aged 50, was shot and killed by Russian troops when they opened fire. A spokeswoman for the Times said Renaud was “a talented filmmaker who had contributed to The New York Times over the years.” He was not reporting for The New York Times at the time he was in Ukraine. Time issued a statement later on Sunday confirming that “Renaud was working on a Time Studios project which focused on the global refugee crisis.”

Andriy Nebytov, Kyiv’s police chief, said the Russian soldiers had targeted Renaud and shot two other journalists in the process. The wounded were taken to hospital. This is the first reported death of a foreign journalist in the war in Ukraine.
Juan Arredondo, one of the injured journalists, was with Brent when the fatal shooting happened. Arredondo said, “We were across one of the first bridges in Irpin, going to film other refugees leaving, and we got into a car. Somebody offered to take us to the other bridge, and we crossed a checkpoint, and they started shooting at us. So, the driver turned around, and they kept shooting. My friend is Brent Renaud and he’s been shot and left behind… I saw him being shot in the neck.”
