Polokwane police have launched a manhunt for gunmen who shot and killed a professor from the University of Limpopo during his morning jog in Polokwane on Sunday 13 March.
Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said chartered accountant and associate professor Saber Tayob Mohammed, 51, was going for his morning jog on Munnik Avenue in Sterkpark around 06:30 when unknown gunmen opened fire on him. The suspects are believed to have been driving a white VW Polo.
The polo was seen driving past the victim and made a U-turn before the shooting. “The said vehicle stopped next to him, and a passenger got out of the car and shot the victim several times at point blank range. The suspects then fled the scene,” Mojapelo explained.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Major General Jan Scheepers, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, has called on anyone who has information which can help in apprehending the suspects who killed the University of Limpopo lecturer to contact warrant officer Joseph Malebana on 072 492 9635 or call the crime stop number 0860010111.
Callers who wish to stay anonymous out of fear of being targeted are granted permission to do so.
