Faiz Mills (37), a well known photographer in Kimberley, says his love for photography and all things art started when he was still in school. He moved to Cape Town in 2007 and was fascinated by the culture and nature surroundings.
“I decided to get myself a simple digital camera. In 2013 I moved back to Kimberley. My father gave me a professional camera as a gift as he saw my potential and love for photos. I never studied photography, but I learnt through YouTube tutorial videos. I recently discovered that I could capture people. From there, in 2013, I decided to become a freelance photographer because of the inquiries that kept coming in.”
Faiz has been married to his wife, Chanei Mills, a social worker, for ten years and they have two beautiful daughters.
As a born and bred Kimberlite, he works full time as a communication officer at the department of agriculture in the Northern Cape, with graphic design, web developing and photography as job description.
“I love taking photos of people, whether it’s photos of maternity, couples or weddings. But the best part are portraits, fashion and lifestyle. One thing I can do, is boost my subject’s confidence, let them love themselves even more and knowing that they are happy with their photos. I have retouching editing skills, thanks to my graphic design experience. My clients always tell me about my good angle skills.”
Something that people do not know about Faiz is that he is hearing impaired and that he is a power lifter in his spare time.
“I am a huge rugby fan. I am also into the fashion industry – the clothing line is still on the bucket list. I visit art galleries and I love travelling.”
When asked where he sees himself in five years, Faiz says he would like to travel the world, have a professional running photo studio and become a brand ambassador for any photography brand.
“Follow your passion, it will take you anywhere unexpectedly. Don’t compare your work to others, it’s your art and everyone is different. Just do you!”
