The Taliban have taken over Kabul airport after the last US flight left early on Tuesday morning. The militant group’s leaders gathered on the tarmac, declaring “this victory belongs to us all”.
Throughout the night, heavy gunfire was reported in Kabul as the pro-Taliban forces celebrated their “victory”.
According to US officials, they alongside allies, managed to evacuate about 123 000 people before the 31 August deadline.
US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken says that a “new chapter of America’s engagement with Afghanistan has begun”.
