Thousands of people, including tourists on campsites, have been evacuated as firefighters attempt to tackle a wildfire close to the Riviera, in France.
Many of the people were only given a few minutes to leave as hundreds of firefighters were deployed in the Var region to the west of Saint-Tropez. About 900 firefighters and 120 police had been deployed.
According to fire officials the blaze broke out on Monday, during an intense heat wave, and has consumed about 6 000 hectares. Twenty people suffered smoke inhalation and six firefighters were hurt.
Southern France is only the latest area in Europe to be ravaged by a wildfire this summer as temperatures soar to record levels around the Mediterranean. According to scientists, heat waves are becoming more frequent and extreme due to climate change.
Greece, Turkey, Spain and Portugal are among the few countries that have been struggling with wildfires.
Elsewhere in Europe, flash floods have hit Austria, northern Italy and Germany.
