Tread carefully, a few years from now there will be a lush park in a corner of Bhopal City in India where you will be walking on the final resting place of about 6 000 Covid-19 victims.
About a 1 115-square-metre area in the city is being converted into a memorial and burial place for those who died during the Covid-19 pandemic.
This is due to the city’s main Bhadbhada Vishram Ghat crematorium running out of space to store the vast amounts of uncollected ash from Covid-19 victims.
The outlet estimated that about 21 truckloads of the ashes from over 6 000 people cremated from March 15 to June 15 will be used in the development of the park.
The ashes will be blended with a mixture of soil, cow manure, wood sawdust, sand, and other material before being used in the park. The park will be able to accommodate anywhere between 3 500 to 4 000 plants and the development committee is inviting people to come forward to plant saplings, promising to take care of the plants until they grow into a tree.
New Delhi is also struggling with piles of uncollected ash but volunteers have chosen to scatter the remains in the Ganges River instead of burying them.
India has recorded over 30 million Covid-19 cases and over 400 000 deaths.
