A small drawing of a bear’s head doen by Leonardo da Vinci is expected to sell for $16.7m at a London auction on Thursday.
Measuring at 7×7cm, the drawing named, Head of a Bear is over 500 years old.
According to Christie’s auction house, who are hosting the sale, Head of a Bear is among only a few drawings by Leonardo da Vinci that are still privately owned.
Laetitia Masson, an expert in old master drawings at Christie’s, said that Leonardo da Vinci was fascinated by nature and animals in general.
The sketch had previously belonged to British painter and collector, Sir Thomas Lawrence, before being sold at Christie’s in 1860 for £2.50. This time Christie’s predicts that it will fetch between £8m and £12m, not including fees.
