Transform some copper piping and concrete into a cool industrial bedside lamp. Here’s how…
PROJECT Concrete & copper lamp
You will need
• Pipe cutter
• Small scissors
• An electrician
• Masking tape
• Cement mix
• Bucket
Note This is a great project if you’re doing home renovations and have a professional sparky on hand to help you.
Step 1. Use pipe cutter to cut copper pipe into 1 x 10cm length, 2 x 14.5cm lengths and 1 x 55cm length. Or ask your local hardware store to cut the pipe to size for you.
Step 2. Assemble pipe into an “S” shape with elbow fixtures. Start with the 10cm piece (vertically), then one 14.5cm piece (horizontally), then the 55cm piece (vertically) then the second 14.5cm piece (horizontally) at the base. Use picture at left to get a better idea.
Step 3. Ask your electrician to cut off the extension lead at the plug. Thread cord through copper piping, entering in at the 14.5cm piece and exiting at the 10cm piece.
Step 4. Use scissors to cut one 13mm circle out of one small side of the takeaway container, making sure the hole is close to the bottom. Thread pipe through hole. Ensure stem of lamp is sitting in the middle of the container and some of the pipe is poking out of the side. Use masking tape to seal hole around pipe.
Step 5. To make concrete, prepare cement mix in bucket according to packet instructions. Fill plastic container with concrete and allow to set. (You can use two chairs on either side of lamp to hold in position.) When concrete is set, cut off plastic container using scissors.
Step 6. Get your electrician to attach bayonet fitting (socket that holds lightbulb, inside suspension kit) to extension lead. Attach lightbulb, plug lead into power socket and switch on. Happy bedtime reading!
