Eben Etzebeth puts his weight behind #care4kings

SOUTH AFRICA. – Eben Etzebeth, Springbok rugby player, has pledged his support for the Care 4 Kings initiative.

Etzebeth, who was part of the 2019 World Cup winning Springbok rugby squad, says in a personal video that he supports the initiative of Braam van Straaten, former Springbok rugby player.

Van Straaten started the initiative to raise funds for the liquidated Southern Kings franchise, which consists of 36 players and personnel.

Van Straaten is “humbled by support”

“I am humbled by the support of the players. The players show their heart by supporting this. I didn’t know anything about what we are doing here with regards to fundraising and I am learning every day. It’s more about caring and the hearts of the people supporting us than anything else,” says Van Straaten.

Six days before payday – no pay

The Southern Kings players and staff were informed last month that the Kings are insolvent. They were informed days before payday that there will be no further salaries payable. The players and staff were left in what can only be described as a “rugby desert” with nowhere to go and no time to plan for their future.

Van Straaten says the sole purpose of this initiative is to financially support the players and the staff of the Kings.

Support players and staff

Care 4 Kings, an initiative to support the Kings, were started to support the players and staff. I will act as the chairman of Care 4 Kings and have put together a team to help me. Piet Heymans, from Sport Employees Unite, Rudi Ferreira, from FiND iT news agency, Robbie Kempson, previous director of rugby of the Southern Kings and Cassie Carstens, sports administrator, will assist me,” says van Straaten.

Care 4 Kings are pleading with rugby enthusiasts, businessmen and the general rugby community, as well as current and ex-rugby players as well to become involved with this initiative and support the players and staff in their hour of need.

SA Rugby Legends Association, Sport Employees Unite, André Rademan from Eastern Province Rugby Union and several other organizations have already indicated that they support this initiative.

“The first project we have will kick off this Friday, where our sports memorabilia online auction will take place at www.care4kings.co.za.”

All rugby enthusiasts can bid on, amongst others, the Springbok rugby blazer of Braam van Straaten, the Sharks jersey from AJ Venter and the World Cup winning rugby jersey of Mzwandile Wanky Stick.
