BLOEMFONTEIN – Nie vir sensitiewe lesers nie! Die DBV in Bloemfontein was onlangs geskok toe hulle ’n klag gekry het van ’n dragtende hond met beserings, onder andere haar oë wat buite haar skedel uitgedroog het.
Volgens ’n persverklaring deur die DBV het die eienaar ’n veearts vir mediese raad oor droë oë by die teef gekontak het. Die veearts het aangedring dat die eienaar haar na sy praktyk neem.

During the national lockdown, we receive more complaints than before. But that doesn’t stop us from helping every animal in Bloemfontein and around the Free State.
Recently, we received a complaint from a veterinarian in the Free State about owners neglecting their dog. Veterinarians are legally obligated to report any case of suspected animal cruelty. It is, therefore, not surprising that this veterinarian contacted us immediately when she saw the extent of the dog’s injuries.
When we arrived at the veterinarian’s practice, she showed us a small miniature Doberman with severe injuries. The veterinarian told us that the owner had contacted her saying that the dog’s eyes were dry and enquired as to what she can give the dog to help the dog. The owner also informed the veterinarian that the dog is pregnant and that the due date is in May. The veterinarian asked the owner to come into her practice so that she can examine the dog.
The veterinarian was shocked by what she saw. The dog’s eyes were outside of its skull and completely dried out. The dog also had a wound on the back of her head. The owners left the dog with the veterinarian to do a sonar as they were more concerned about the fetus than the pregnant mother.
“When we arrived and saw the dog, we were shocked at what had happened to the dog,” said inspector Duan Matthee at the Bloemfontein SPCA. The veterinarian told us that, according to the owners, the dog was still in good condition on Saturday night, but that changed after a snake had bitten her on Sunday morning. When the veterinarian saw the dog, she knew that the owners weren’t telling the truth and proceeded to contact the SPCA.
An examination of the dog revealed an injury to the back of the head. There was an open wound where puss came out, which indicated that it was an old injury. The veterinarian also found dried blood between the skin and the dog’s skull. A crack in the skull indicated that blunt force had been applied to the head, causing the eyes to pop out. When examining the eyes, we saw that there was puss coming out of both. One can only imagine the pain this little dog suffered. These were clearly not recent injuries, and the owners had prolonged her suffering. Apparently, the owners were breeding with the dog and were only interested in the puppies.
“The selfishness of the owners! They are more concerned about the unborn puppies! My question is whether they would have left the dog to suffer until the due date?” said Matthee. The dog had to he humanly euthanised due to the severity of the injuries and to stop the suffering. A case of animal cruelty has been opened against the owners. We know that this dog would still be alive if the owners had acted responsibly and had taken the dog to a veterinarian. But, instead, they were more interested in the money for the puppies.

This case again reveals the irresponsibleness of breeding with dogs. It also reaffirms why the SPCA is against breeding. Please support your local SPCA and adopt an animal rather than supporting breeders.
