GAUTENG. – Springs-inwoners aan die Oos-Rand, wat deel is van die City of Ekurhuleni, het Donderdagaand ingespring en self hul elektrisiteitstoevoer herstel.
Die inwoners het besluit genoeg is genoeg en het in hul hordes bymekaargekom. Hulle het soos een man saamgestaan en die elektrisiteit wat reeds ‘n rukkie probleme gee en af was, self herstel. Hulp en ondersteuning is aan mekaar gegee, of dit nou deur aanmoediging, die fisiese werk, petrol/diesel vir kragopwekkers of die voorsien van eet-en-drinkgoed was.
DA-raadslede van wyk 72, 75 en 76 het ‘n verklaring vrygestel waarin in hulle sê hulle het ‘n klagte by Nersa ingedien en eis onmiddellike aksie vir die gereelde kragonderbrekings in Springs.

DA Ward Councillors File NERSA Complaint to Demand Immediate Action on Ongoing Power Outages in Springs
The Democratic Alliance ward councillors representing Wards 72, 75 and 76, Ekurhuleni, Springs, are deeply troubled by the persistent and disruptive power outages that have plagued our community. In the past week, we have documented over 45 area and suburban power outages, causing severe inconveniences, economic losses, and upheaval in our daily lives.
These recurrent power outages are more than just a local annoyance; they are a direct breach of the licensing conditions governing electricity distribution facilities, as defined by the Electricity Regulation Act. This Act stipulates that no distribution facility can operate without a license issued by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), and we firmly believe these outages infringe upon legal provisions.
Furthermore, the Electricity Regulation Act requires that the Ekurhuleni Metro must ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability, and orderly development in the operation of electricity supply infrastructure. However, our community’s reality is at odds with these principles.
The impact of these power outages is extensive and devastating. Local businesses are suffering significant financial losses due to damaged equipment, lost working hours, and spoiled goods. The livelihoods of our residents are at stake, as the stability of our local economy hangs in the balance.
In addition, power outages pose a serious threat to the provision of critical services, including healthcare. Medical facilities rely on uninterrupted power supply to function effectively, and the well-being of patients who depend on electrically powered medical equipment is in jeopardy.
Our children’s education is also at risk. Frequent power outages disrupt online learning and hinder homework completion. The long-term effects on our children’s education are deeply concerning.
These power disruptions further undermine our local economy and could lead to a decline in property values. A reliable power supply is essential for economic growth, investment, and job creation in the region. The current situation discourages potential investors and undermines the financial well-being of our residents.
In response to these critical issues, we have submitted a formal complaint to NERSA. We urge NERSA to conduct a thorough investigation into the root causes of these persistent power outages and to ensure that necessary corrective measures are swiftly implemented.
As DA ward councillors, we are committed to representing the best interests of our constituents. We implore NERSA to act swiftly and decisively in response to our formal complaint, to ensure justice, accountability, and the immediate resolution of the challenges we face.
We will closely monitor the progress of NERSA’s investigation and advocate for a rapid and effective resolution. Our community deserves a reliable power supply, and we will continue our efforts until this essential service is restored.
