‘n Man het vir dieremishandeling in ‘n hof in Bloemfontein verskyn, nadat ‘n Kaapse ooruil na bewering met sy wete vir dae sonder hulp in ‘n draad vasgesit het. Hy het glo ook ‘n beseerde bobbejaan wat hy gevang het in ‘n kleinerige metaalkabinet aangehou.
Werner Botha van Bloemfontein-DBV is bewus gemaak van sosialemediaplasings oor die uil wat vir ten minste drie dae in ‘n draad vasgesit het.
Die verdagte het op kommentaar op sy plasing reageer deur glo te sê dat hy na die diere omsien en dat dit “gekoop moet word.”
Nadat hy ‘n bobbejaan gevang het, het hy ook foto’s van die dier wat sigbare beserings aan sy linker voorarm opgedoen het, op sosiale media geplaas.
Met inligting van ‘n informant is die Inspektoraat van Bloemfontein-DBV Sondagaand Ladybrand toe.
Die verdagte is opgespoor, maar daar is gevind dat die beseerde bobbejaan sonder mediese aandag vrygelaat is. Die uil, wat steeds in die draad vasgesit het, is gered.
Pogings word steeds aangewend om die beseerde bobbejaan op te spoor.
‘n Saak van dieremishandeling en oortredings van die natuurbewaringsordonnansies van die Vrystaat is teen die individu geopen en hy het reeds vir die eerste keer in die hof verskyn.

A cruel fate it must be to have the gift of flight or the ability to climb. The ability to soar in the sky, taste the air and have absolute freedom. A fate that so much wildlife needs to suffer but often with great freedom comes, confinement and with confinement comes cruelty. The Bloemfontein SPCA was recently made aware of an individual posting an owl on social media that is trapped in fencing for at least three days. The individual knew about the owl in the fence and continued to ignore the plight of the majestic cape eagle owl. He continued to post on Facebook and when asked he bluntly replied that he cares for the animals and that “you will need to buy them”.
If only the story ended there he continued to send photos of a baboon he captured earlier that day. The baboon had sustained severe injuries to its left front arm and had lost a large amount of blood. Yet even injured the individual confined the monkey in a small metal cupboard, just hoping that he could get a quick buck.
With the help of an informant the Inspectorate of the Bloemfontein SPCA was able to determine his address and proceed to head to Ladybrand late Sunday night. On arrival at the property, we could find the individual and we understood that it was a matter of urgency that both animals be assisted. The individual released the baboon with severe injuries after attracting the attention of the SPCA. The release of the baboon is an utmost disregard for that animal’s well being and surely with the severe weather conditions would lead to death. The owl was found on the property still stuck in the fence after at least three days and was swiftly rescued by inspectors from the Bloemfontein SPCA.
I find it difficult that anyone can just walk past a distressed animal without doing anything to alleviate its suffering. Surely if someone truly cares he would take the offer to assist the animal but instead he placed the owl on social media for everyone to see. I find it disheartening that the world has gotten to such a place that suffering can be exploited for a quick buck and that a life of an animal is worth whatever the buyer wants to pay” said Inspector Werner Botha.”
A case of animal cruelty and contraventions of the Free State nature conservation ordinances has been opened against the individual and a first court appearance has already been made. A continued effort is being made by the Bloemfontein SPCA to find the injured baboon and provide it with the care it needs.
