Thrive: The Power of Resilience by Richard Sutton is published by Pan Macmillan.

Lucas Radebe, former SA soccer icon, describes Thrive as a powerful perspective into human potential. I found it thought-provoking, inspiring and definitely worth a read. Sutton dedicates Thrive to those who have had to face and overcome struggles and adversity, and who are supporting others in their journey.

We all want to live extraordinary lives not bound by limitations. Resilience – “the ultimate bridge between challenge and potential, potential and performance, and performance and success” – can help unlock our fullest potential. Sutton’s cutting-edge consultancy work is process-driven, adaptable and attainable through lifestyle and behaviour changes.

What the book is all about

The blurb on the back cover reads: “Thrive is a rich source of unique and practical skills and tools that are easy to apply to help you develop and harness your resilience and to realise your fullest potential.” It delivers what it promises.

Thrive consists of 274 pages. There are three parts titled “Understanding our potential”, “The neuroscience of resilience” and “Lessons in resilience form Olympic champions – a masterclass in behavioural science” with supporting chapters that include lessons, skills and examples.

Sutton, who had a difficult childhood, writes: “What defines resilience is not surviving but rather overcoming adversity. This reality is a learnt skill – a collection of behaviours and psychological traits that when unified allow us to realise our dreams and our fullest potential.”

His intention with Thrive is to share those skills. He wishes to provide readers with tools to better navigate the complexity that is life and exceed expectations. He does this in a clear, conversational manner. I loved that he included takeaway messages, section summaries and a conclusion.
