Sers. Vakele Mark Mjoli (43) is Saterdag 3 September om ongeveer 09:00 noodlottig gewond, volgens ‘n verklaring deur brig. Tembinkosi Kinana, provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder in die Oos-Kaap.
Sers. Mjoli was deel van n misdaadvoorkomingseenheid. Vier lede het reageer na ‘n noodoproep oor ‘n besigheidsroof by ‘n kettingwinkel op die dorp.
Met aankoms op die toneel het sers. Mjoli na bewering ‘n man geklee in ‘n sekuriteitsuniform genader en uitgevra na die verdagtes van die gewapende roof. Die man het hom glo na die deur gewys en terwyl sers. Mjoli na die deur beweeg het, het die man lukraak op hom begin skiet.
Sers. Mjoli is op die toneel dood.
Die ander polisielede was ook onder vuur en nog ‘n lid, konst. Mfundiso Ndede (35), is ernstig gewond en na die naaste hospitaal gehaas vir mediese behandeling.
Tydens kruisvuur het die polisielede daarin geslaag om twee van die gewapende verdagtes wat op hulle geskiet het dood te skiet.
Twee van die verdagtes kon daarin slaag om te vlug, maar nog een is gearresteer.
Polisielede het op twee vuurwapens en ‘n voertuig wat deur die verdagtes gebruik is, beslag gelê.
‘n Geregtelike doodsondersoek is begin, asook sake van moord en poging tot moord geopen.
Lt.genl. Nomthetheleli Mene het dadelik simpatie en meegevoel met die oorledene se naasbestaandes in ‘n boodskap betuig.

ENGCOBO: The South African Police Service management in the Eastern Cape has offered condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased Sergeant Vakele Mark Mjoli aged 43 who was fatally wounded on Saturday morning, 3 September 2022 at about 9:00 in Engcobo.
Sergeant Vakele Mark Mjoli was part of a crime prevention response team consisting of four officers who received an emergency call of an armed business robbery that was in progress in one of the retail chain stores in town.
According to the information, as they arrived at the shop, Sergeant Mjoli approached a man who was standing in front of the door and clad in security gear. Believing that the man was a security officer, he enquired from him the whereabouts of the suspects. The man pointed and directed him to the door. As he was proceeding towards the door, the man who was later identified as one of the suspects, turned and started shooting at the police officer who died at the scene.
As SAPS member’s colleagues advanced towards and inside the shop, they were also met with a hail of gunfire from other suspects who were inside the shop. Consequently, another member Constable Mfundiso Ndede aged 35, suffered serious injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical care.
On the other hand, two of the suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange of gunfire. Two pistol firearms believed to belong to suspects were found at the scene. One vehicle also believed to have been a getaway car, was also found in the area. Two of the five suspects are still at large, whilst one was arrested by the police.
A murder case, attempted murder case and inquest are currently under investigation. No money was reported stolen during the incident.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has immediately conveyed a word of sympathy and deepest condolences to the affected families. “It is really sad that on the eve of the National Commemoration Day for our fallen heroes, we woke up to yet another tragic and cold-blooded killing of our member. We shall not sleep, until the rest of those involved in this heartless act of brutality are found, to face the consequences of their actions in the courts of law. I also wish Constable Mfundiso Ndede a speedy recovery from the injuries sustained during this ordeal. Our thoughts and prayers as SAPS family in the Eastern Cape are with their families. May Sergeant Mjoli’s precious soul rest in eternal peace” Lieutenant General Mene concluded.
