The campaign highlighted the issue of human trafficking on Freedom Day, saying that the illegal industry of human trafficking is the fastest growing industry around the world, generating around R258-trillion or more per year.

“An estimated 2.8 out of every 1000 people in Africa are living in modern day slavery. Of the trafficked victims recorded in Africa, 64% are children. The different types of human trafficking include trafficking for forced criminal activities, trafficking for sexual exploitation, trafficking for forced labour, and trafficking for the removal of organs,” said the report.

The report said: Human trafficking also affects men, with several rescue missions having helped some of these men escape where they were held captive.

Katie Modrau, A21SA manager, said human trafficking was at an all time high and was often not noticeable. “We would like to bring awareness to this crime, the many facets it presents itself in and how civil society can play its role.

“The more we know about this issue, the more we can protect ourselves, our beloved ones, and our communities. No one person can do everything but every one of us can do something,” she said.
