An Eastern Cape woman who went to teach English in China was found dead on the floor in her flat in Shanghai on April 18.
The South African woman moved to China in search of greener pastures, but ended up dead in a foreign country far away from her loved ones.
Nomaqocwa Blackie (29), also known as Noma by her friends from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, was found dead on the floor next to her bed by the Chinese police and her South African colleague and friend, Abongile Mboto. Her family was trying to call her on the previous day but could not reach her.
It was a norm in the Blackie family to have prayer sessions on Sunday evenings at 17:00. The family had prayer sessions on Zoom every Sunday and that was an opportunity to stay connected with each other. The family tired to connect with Noma but could not reach her on Sunday evening.
According to Pumza Thuse, her sister, Blackie’s friend and colleague became very worried when Noma failed to submit her learning material video at the school, they both taught English in Shanghai. “Since Abongile had an access code to Noma’s apartment, she gave it to the police and Covid-19 volunteers who went to her flat, and this is where the shocking discovery was made. It is yet not clear how she died as the police are still investigating,” said Thuse.
Clayson Monyela, the spokesperson of DIRCO, said the South African consul-general in Shanghai was aware about Blackie’s death. “According to the principle of consular confidentiality and for the sake of the family’s privacy, DIRCO is not in a position to share personal details with the media,” Monyela said.
