Elderly man faces charges of child rape in Picketberg

An elderly man from a rural town called Picketberg has been charged with child rape. He appeared at the local magistrate’s court on Wednesday facing charges of rape, sexual assault, and grooming. The accused cannot be named to protect the identity of the victims who are minors.

It is alleged that the elderly man lured the children from nearby farms by offering them money, fruits, and food. Community activist Billy Claasen said the suspect was very well known in the Picketbuerg area.

“We will petition against bail and ask that the man must stay behind bars. He is a danger to the community and also the broader society,” Claasen added.

In another incident, a Durban father was handed life sentence for repeated rape of his young daughter while he was out on parole for a rape charge. The 35-year-old man was sentenced by the Ntuzuma regional court to like for raping his daughter who was nine years of age for three months.

Natasha Kara, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, welcomed the successful prosecution. Kara said the accused repeatedly raped his daughter in March 2020 in Newlands West, while he was out on bail. “The child was nine years old at the time and the man was out on parole for a previous rape conviction. He would take her to his room or would go to her room and rape her, he would even make her bath with him,” Kara said.
