South African Afro-pop and soul singer Lerato Moipone, better known as Lira, has suffered a stroke while in Germany, her family said on Tuesday night. The family confirmed that Lera’s ability to speak has been affected by the stroke.
“She is currently undergoing treatment here in South Africa, led by the best medical team available. Her medical team has advised that her journey to recovery will require patience and therefore, it is unlikely that she will be able to perform in the short term,” said the family in a statement.
The 43-year-old artist is said to be in good spirit after suffering from the stroke incident, and she is surrounded by her close friends and relatives on her road to recovery. “We thank you all in advance for your prayers, support, kindness and utmost sensitivity and consideration during this very challenging time in her life.”
Libra’s fans and other music artists took to social media to express their shock at the news and send their well wishes to her as she works towards recovery.
A tweet from one of her supporters, MASTANDI @SpitchNzawumbi, reads: “Lira is one of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in the entertainment industry. We can disagree on a lot of things, but not on her work ethic and how seriously she takes her craft. News about her health is devastating. I challenge all believers to pray for Lira.”
