Suspect arrested for murdering ward councillor

The National Task Team established to investigate political violence and killings in Kwazulu-Natal has arrested a man in connection with the murder of a ward councillor attached to the Umvoti Municipality in Greytown.

Colonel Athlenda Mathe, police spokesperson says, thirty-five-year-old Thembinkosi Lombo was gunned down on 25 February 2022 in the Greytown CBD. At the time of his death, he was serving as an ANC councillor for ward 13 in the Umvoti Municipality.

On Saturday 26 March 2022, police traced 20-year-old Lalelani Zondi in Jeppestown, Johannesburg.

“The suspect has already appeared before the Greytown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of murder and will appear again ‪on Monday, 04 April 2022,” said Mathe.

The Task Team has not ruled out the possibility of arresting more suspects in this matter.
