A 35-year-old man arrested in connection with the murder of six people appeared at the Khayelitsha Magistrates court on Monday and said he had an alibi. The suspect has been remanded in custody.
Thando Shuba appeared in court after he was arrested over the weekend. He is the only suspect who has been arrested over the murder of six people aged between 18 and 27 in Khayelitsha on 20 March. It is alleged that three gunmen opened fire on six people at the Enkanini informal settlement killing all suspects.

The matter was postponed for investigators to check if the alibi from the suspect is true and for bail information to be confirmed. Eric Ntabazalila, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson said “Thando Shuba appeared in Khayelitsha Court 1 on Monday morning. He is charged with six counts of murder.” Phindile Vepile, the defence attorney said they will present evidence that shows that Shuba was not there when the crime happened. The evidence will prove Shuba’s alibi.
Police Minister Beki Cele made a tour around Khayelitsha and promised that the suspects who were involved in the mass shooting will be speedily arrested. The police initiated a 72-hours activation plan which involves various specialised members of the South African police service to crack down on crime and track the suspects.
