KwaZulu-Natal police are on high alert over growing threats of violence against foreign owned shops and criminality in the province. It is alleged that the threats have been making rotation on social media through voice notes and other messages.
Police say security officers have been put on high alert and will react to any event that may show up and make arrests where they should. Jay Naicker, the police spokesperson said the police will be deployed strategically and will arrest those who do not act within the confines of the law.

“Security forces have also taken note that the planned event at the Gugu Dlamini Park for Sunday was not approved by the eThekwini municipality as permission was not obtained by the organisers from the Parks and Recreation Development. We are appealing to those that may react to the misleading voice notes, not to partake in any activity where the laws of the country may be broken,” said Naicker.
Naicker has further asked citizens to refrain from reposting and sharing messages that they receive as the information shared might be fake and lead to destruction. “Police will not hesitate to deal decisively with those found contravening the law,” Naicker said.
Supporters of Operation Dudula, which aims to chase undocumented foreign nationals out of the country, were set to dead to Durban on Sunday. The operation began in Johannesburg and was set to have its first meeting in Durban.
According to The Witness, refugee organisations told foreign nationals in the city to stay home this weekend as there are threats of xenophobic attacks.
