Ukraine has shamed South Africa on the global stage on its UN resolution to the crisis in Ukraine. The resolution which did not make any reference to Russia was rejected by the General Assembly and left South Africa’s “neutral” stance in tatters.
South Africa has taken the position of not calling out Russia in its invasion of Ukraine but rather calling the two sides to resolve matters through dialogue. The resolution was rejected by the General Assembly as South Africa has failed to call out the aggressor in the matter.

Sergiy Kyslytsya, the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, took a swipe at South Africa’s “neutral” stance over the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has claimed the lives of hundreds of civilians and displaced over three million people.
South Africa’s resolution titled “Humanitarian situation emanating out of the conflict in Ukraine” did not gather any support. The resolution failed to make any reference to Russia or Vladimir Putin and it also failed to speak of the unprovoked attack which was launched in Ukraine in February. Despite some countries backing South Africa’s resolution to the conflict, it was not supported by enough members, thus the resolution was rejected.
While President Cyril Ramaphosa has made means to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin and gone as far as thanking him for taking his call, ironically, he has yet to make any attempt to speak with the president of Ukraine. South Africa has instead blamed NATO’s expansion into Eastern Europe for the conflict.
