A 59-year-old tenant from Tembisa who was found guilty of rape and sexual assault of a minor was sentenced to 23 years behind bars on Tuesday. John Edward Oosthuizen was arrested in 2016 for raping a 14-year-old child while he was renting at the backroom of the victim’s home.

According to Captain Xoli Mbele, Johannesburg Central police spokesperson, Oosthuizen raped and sexually assaulted the victim while he was renting a backroom at her parents’ home in Moffat View, Johannesburg between January and July 2015.

“The first incident occurred when the young girl’s mother was not around and left her daughter at home alone. On numerous occasions, Oosthuizen would kiss, touch the young girl’s bod and would rape the young girl,” said Mbele. The matter was not known until the mother of the victim heard her screaming on 11 July 2015. The daughter shouted that she would tell her mother what the tenant had been doing to her and that is how the matter came to be known.

The daughter told her mother that Oosthuizen had been doing that to her for the past seven months. The suspect went into hiding once the matter came to light and only handed himself over after receiving a call from the police to report to the police station. The suspect thought he was called in for something different when he went to the police station.

Oosthuizen will be among the people registered under the National Register of Sexual Offenders and will also be declared unfit to be in possession of a firearm.
