President Cyril Ramaphosa formally announced his recognition of Prince Misuzulu Sinqobile Zulu in terms of the Traditional and Khoi-San Act of 2019 as the new king of AmaZulu. This announcement was issued on Wednesday 16 March 2022.
A statement by the presidency which reads, “In terms of the requirements of the Act, the Royal family identified Prince Misuzulu Sinqobile Zulu as the person who qualifies in terms of customary law and customs to assume the position of king and applied to the president for his recognition.”
Prince Misuzulu is expected to ascend the throne following the passing of his father, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, who passed away in March 2021. The late king appointed Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu as the regent as she comes from the royal family of Eswatini. The queen appointed her son Prince Misuzulu as the next king.

Ramaphosa sent his warmest wishes to the newly recognised king of AmaZulu. He said, “The assumption to the throne by His Majesty Prince Misuzulu kaZwelithini Zulu is of great significance in the proud and distinguished history of AmaZulu.
“His Majesty is the successor to a long line of revered monarchs, who fought with great courage and great determination for the welfare and security of their people. I join all the people of South Africa in wishing His Majesty King Misuzulu a long and prosperous reign.”
The Pietermaritzburg High Court ruled that the coronation of Prince Misuzulu can go ahead as his position of kingship was not being contested in court. Deputy Judge President Isaac Madondo cleared the way for the new king to take his throne.
