Isaac Madondo, the acting KwaZulu-Natal Judge President will give ruling on Wednesday on an application for an interdict to prevent Prince Misuzulu KaZwelithini from taking the throne and becoming the new Zulu king.
Madondo will give judgement at the Pietermaritzburg High Court where the matter was first brought forward. The ruling which is expected to determine whether Misuzulu can take his throne as king might not end there, even if the ruling goes in favour of Misuzulu. The legal battle in the royal family has divided the family with a chance of the applicants appealing the ruling if the court rules in Misuzulu’s favour.
Zulu Princesses Ntandoyenkosi and Zulu and Ntombizosuthu Zulu-Duma applied for an interdict claiming that the will of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini’s was forged. The late king passed away in March last year and in his will had appointed Misuzulu’s mother as the Zulu regent. In the will, the late regent named Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu, who in Zulu custom is considered to be the “great wife” because she hailed from Eswatini royalty, as his heir.

The queen fell ill and passed away before she could take the throne. The Zulu nation was still mourning the death of King Goodwill at the time. In her will before she passed away, the queen named Prince Misuzulu as her successor. The princesses say that if experts can prove that the signature is forged, then Misuzulu should not become king.
Queen Sibongile alleges that her marriage is the only valid marriage as she was married in community of property with the late King Goodwill. She wants 50% of the late king’s estate.
The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has told its supporters that no matter what the court ruling will be on Wednesday, it will not affect King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini’s position as the new Zulu king.
