South Africans have responded with outrage over DStv’s streaming limit decision. MultiChoice has announced that from 22 March 2022, DStv video streaming will be limited to one device at a time. The move is meant to crack down on password sharing and pirate viewing.
Subscribers are currently able to steam concurrently from two separate devices. With this move set to take effect in March, only a single device will be able to stream content at a time. “Password sharing and piracy are challenges for streaming providers globally,” says Multichoice.
The measures which are being put in place are meant to limit “concurrent streaming”, and the way to prevent that is by preventing password sharing and piracy. The changes which come into effect in next month will be made to all the DStv subscriptions across Africa. However, the people who will be directly affected are those who make use of more than one concurrent stream.

Public outrage over the announcement carried on from Tuesday evening and went on to Wednesday morning. People responded to the decision by Multichoice by saying that they are ready to cut ties with DStv and questioned why MultiChoice does not have a DStv family plan. This would allow more than one family member to watch DStv online the same way as people watch movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
The outraged DStv subscribers describe the move by MultiChoice as “dumb and “not smart”. With Disney streamer being launched in June, many of the DStv subscriber have made their voices heard loud and clear that they are moving to the Disney stream. Some have ended their subscription and are making use of Netflix for the time being.
