AmaZulu are playing CAF Champions League for the first time this season and began their group stages away with Raja Casablanca where they were downed 1-0.

Speaking at the press conference on Thursday afternoon, Usuthu coach Benni McCarthy believes that they didn’t embarrass themselves considering the season campaigners they were up against.

“Season campaigners (Raja Casablanca), currently the fourth best team in Africa after Al Ahly, Zamalek, Wydad Casablanca, so that speaks volumes of the calibre of the team that we were up against,” he said.

“Pound to pound, we didn’t embarrass ourselves at all, we were brave.

“We did well, we were unfortunate not to take the chances.

“I understand we were nervous at some stages but the minute we put our foot down, we created two glorious chances, saved one of them, one was a one on one situation chance.

In the second match of the group on the upcoming Friday, Usuthu will host Horoya who also lost their first match to ES Setif.

The Durban-based club captain Makhehleni Makhaula feels that they need to be clinical in front of goals.

“We’ve seen how these African teams are, they behave if they’re one-nil up, so as the coach said, the more will we become clinical in goals, the more it becomes easy for us,” he said.

The match against Guineans will kick off at 21:00 taking place at Princess Magogo Stadium.
