The best way to read news is in your own language. The Moya app, with more than 6,5 million monthly South African users, now features a special Nuus @ Afrikaans section for its Afrikaans readers.

Moya has partnered with Dottry Media (Pty) Ltd, a privately-owned digital publishing company, with websites such as FiND iT, Newssnatch and Moomie.

The Moya app offers a way for South Africans to communicate, through messaging, and meaningfully engage with online content, through the Moya Discover platform, without using their mobile data – even if they have a zero-airtime balance.

“It’s your right to know what is happening in the world.” – Jana Grobbelaar, group editor, Dottry Media

Jana Grobbelaar, group editor of Dottry Media, says the opportunity to partner with the Moya app came just at the right time.

“I believe every South African should have the right to news. It’s your right to know what is happening in the world. You should be informed and have access to information your fellow South Africans have. We don’t all have Wi-Fi at home or even data on our phones and this is what makes Moya the super app it is.

“Now all Afrikaans-speaking South Africans can read the Nuus @ Afrikaans in Discover on Moya. We also have the English option under FiND iT.”

“We are pleased to offer our Afrikaans users a meaningful way to engage with content in their own language.” – Gour Lentell, CEO of Datafree

Gour Lentell, CEO of Datafree, the company behind the Moya App, say the Discover platform offers a wide range of online content to users #datafree, from news to learning materials and job sites.

“The Nuus @ Afrikaans section is a welcome addition to our platform and we are pleased to offer our Afrikaans users a meaningful way to engage with content in their own language.”

Grobbelaar says the company is making use of freelancers around the country and will be adjusting its business model to fit in with the demand of the Moya reader.

“We ran a survey recently to find out what our readers are interested in and we will now adjust our strategy to give them what they want.”

With regards to big publishers, Grobbelaar says it’s mostly too expensive for the average South African to spend on news. “It takes a lot of data to read stories on several Facebook pages, WhatsApp pages, Telegram, Instagram, the list just goes on and on. We provide it all on one platform – now #datafree!”

Not only does this opportunity award users at home to stay up to date with world and local affairs, but it also gives the reader the chance to share their own story.

“We have done articles where someone needed a kidney and for a few weeks after that, we got requests from people who needed donors. It just goes to show how powerful a message can be. Readers identify with what they read and telling their own stories is a very real way to give someone else hope. If a child is missing, there is no better way than getting the word out there on a platform with an established audience.”
