Three sentenced prisoners, who were part of the Boeremag, were granted permission to use their laptops, without a modem, in their cells for personal use as long as they are registered students with any recognized tertiary institute in South Africa.
This follows after the Justice and Correctional Services Minister and the department of Correctional Services dialed to convince the Constitutional Court to overturn a 2018 high court ruling that granted the three former Boeremag members permission to keep their laptops in their cells for study purposes.
The court also ruled that the laptops must be made available for inspection at any given time by any representative of the department.
The three are in prison for the early 2000 plot to violently overthrow the government. Claudia Mokone was killed when a piece of steel landed in her shack during a Boeremag bomb attack.
Since the application was bought, two of the prisoners were released on parole in 2020.
