Nine suspects in Limpopo were arrested for the alleged murder and revenge killing in Gilead over the weekend. It has been alleged that a 52-year-old mother and her daughter killed a man on 22 January.
After the alleged murder, an angry mob showed up at the house where the alleged murder took place and assaulted the mother before burning down the house.
SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said that the police were alerted to a mob justice attack on Saturday. When police arrived on the scene, they found a middle-aged woman lying the yard. She had been severely beaten.
“Police were further directed to another male victim who was lying on the floor unconscious inside the house. The medical personnel were then summoned and certified both victims dead on the scene,” said Mojapelo. The victims were identified as John Mojela, 28, and Grace Mongatane, 52.
According to the police report, preliminary investigation revealed that Mojela was there to visit his girlfriend, Mongatane’s daughter.
The couple allegedly got into an altercation and Mongatane intervened. The police spokesperson said that the mother and daughter attacked the deceased and strangled him to death.
“Subsequent to the murder, an angry mob gathered at the said house and started attacking both mother and daughter and also burnt the house,” said Mojapelo.
Mojela’s girlfriend and her siblings managed to escape from the mob but the mother was dragged behind the house and assaulted with “stones and various objects.”
The suspects fled from the scene but they were arrested on the same day after various police units in the area assembled to hunt them down.
Mongatane’s 23-year-old daughter was arrested for her boyfriend’s alleged murder while eight suspects – aged between 23 and 78 – were arrested for the revenge killing.
The suspects in both matters are expected to appear in the Gilead periodical court on Monday, 24 January.
