At least eight people have been killed and dozens more were injured in a crush outside an Africa Cup of Nations football match in Cameroon.

Videos showed how crowds of screaming football fans were crushed at the entry gates of the stadium as thousands of fans tried to get inside.

Of the 38 injured people, seven are in a serious condition and one child is among those who died said officials.

Due to the Covid restrictions, the stadium was not supposed to be more than 80% full for the game – even if the stadium has a capacity for 60 000.

According to match officials, about 50 000 people were trying to attend.

According to journalists at the stadium fans were trying to force themselves into the stadium even as they were being kept back.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement that it was investigating the situation.

The last 16 match between Cameroon and Comoros took place despite the incident and ended with a 2-1 win for the hosts.
