A newborn baby was found in a trash can of a plane’s bathroom.

The baby boy was found on an Air Mauritius flight from Madagascar to Mauritius on New Year’s Day.

A woman (20) was arrested after she allegedly gave birth on the flight and then put the baby in the rubbish bin. The baby was only discovered after the plane landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

Airport staff conducted a routine inspection of the aircraft. Officials became suspicious when they found a bloody piece of toilet paper on the plane. The BBC reports that they then found the baby in the rubbish bin and took it to a hospital.

The woman was sent for medical evaluation which confirmed she had recently given birth to a newborn. She was admitted to hospital under police guard. Both the mother and the baby are healthy.

The Malagasy woman, who arrived in Mauritius on a two-year work permit, will be questioned after being discharged from hospital and charged with leaving her newborn baby alone.
