Among all the New Year’s babies, a 13-year-old girl became the Eastern Cape’s youngest mother when she gave birth on New Year’s.
The Eastern Cape Department of Health said in a statement that the province welcomed 246 babies on New Year’s Day, including a 13-year-old giving birth to a 2.7 kg baby girl.

She was one of 15 teenagers who gave birth on New Year.
Nomakhosazana Meth, Eastern Cape MEC for health, in the statement called on young girls and boys to refrain from sex or to use condoms or a suitable contraceptive if they are already sexually active. Of the 246 new babies, 133 are their baby girls while 113 of them are boys.
