The South African Police Service, in the Northern Cape, has cautioned residents to be vigilant and alert when utilising ATMS during this festive season, in both secluded, and crowded areas.

Police Spokesperson, Colonel Mashay Gamieldien, said there is an increase in the number of robbery cases reported at ATMS, in the vicinity of banks, especially during the festive season.

“In order to prevent yourself from becoming a victim, make sure that you have your bank card out before you get to the ATM. If you observe suspicious persons while approaching the ATM, do not use the machine,” said Gamieldien.

“Be alert and vigilant of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction. Always cover your pin by shielding the hand typing in the PIN, even if you are alone.

Never accept or request assistance, rather go inside the bank for help.

Do not withdraw large amount of cash. After withdrawing your money, secure it and do not walk with cash in the open.”

To avoid becoming a victim of ATM theft, and self awareness on methods criminals use to access your money, and the steps to be taken to prevent such crimes, here are a few – to take into consideration:

1. Card swapping: Criminals distract you while you are entering your PIN and then swap your card. This is done so quickly that very often you are unaware that you no longer have your own card.

  1. Card skimming: This typically involves tampering with an ATM by placing an additional card reader over the ATM’s. In conjunction with a hidden camera, the fraudsters steal your card details and PIN number.
  2. Do not count or expose your money unnecessarily when depositing or withdrawing. Enter and leave the ATM area as quickly as possible.

Be aware of your surroundings, when doing so.

  1. Never accept help from strangers, and always be on look-out for criminals. If someone offers to help you, walk away from the ATM.
  2. Use ATMs in well-lit, high-traffic areas, to avoid being overpowered or tricked by criminals. If lights are not working, do not use the machine.
  3. Have your bank card ready and in your hands.
  4. Ensure you retrieve your card back from the ATM immediately after your transaction.

If you struggle to retrieve your card from the ATM, call your bank immediately to cancel your card.

Avoid consuming further time, cancel your card immediately if it is lost, stolen or retained by the ATM, and report any unusual activity when using an ATM to your nearest branch, the police or to your bank’s fraud-prevention line.
