Two hippos in Belgium tested positive for Covid-19, which may be the first cases of the virus seen in theses species.

According to Reuters, the two hippos Imani (14) and Hermien (41) were placed in isolation and have no other symptoms than a runny nose.

Francis Vercammen told Reuters the virus is mainly reported worldwide in monkeys and big cats and that it may be the first time the virus has been diagnosed in hippos.

It is believed that the Coronavirus was transmitted from an animal to mankind and that the virus can be transmitted to animals again.

Covid-19 infections in zoos and pets have been reported around the world.

The Antwerp Zoo is investigating the causes of the infection. None of the zookeepers have recently shown Covid-19 symptoms or tested positive for the virus, the zoo said.
