For many previous generations, the Kimberley railway station holds very precious memories. New generations might not get to experience the joys of taking a train ride.
Kimberley railway station is the central railway station of the city of Kimberley, and also of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Because Kimberley is the junction of the main Cape Town–Johannesburg main line with another line from Bloemfontein, it is served by several routes of the Shosholoza Meyl inter-city service. Kimberley railway station is also used by the luxury tourist-oriented Blue Train and the private train holiday company Rovos Rail.
The first train to Kimberley arrived on 28 November 1885. The station itself was built in 1886 and opened officially on Saturday 31st July 1886.
The Kimberley Transport Museum is situated in the part of the railway station previously used as a railway restaurant/café and Post Office. It was officially opened on 28 September 1994. Included among the displays are a velocipede used during the Anglo-Boer War, a photo exhibition depicting the development of the railway in the Northern Cape, and a walk down memory lane.
