SAPS discovers illegal stash of explosives near Orania

The SAPS have praised officials working in the Hopetown district of the Northern Cape, after they discovered a trove of illegal ammunition and explosives at a plot near Orania.

A 48-year-old man was swiftly arrested on Wednesday with a court appearance expected to occur soon while law enforcement officials attempt to uncover why the suspect had such a large supply of illegal explosives and ammunition.

The police were tipped off by a concerned member of the public, which led to the operation carried out on Wednesday.

The SAPS confirmed that the suspect, apprehended at the plot near Orania, has been charged with the illegal possession of ammunition and unauthorized explosives.

“Lt Col Jooste and his members operationalised the information which led them to a plot near Orania. After searching the identified premises, Hopetown SAPS assisted by members of the De Aar Explosives unit discovered a trip flair, 41 rounds of shotgun ammunition, 61 blank rounds, and six rounds of .22 ammunition.”

“A 48-year-old male was arrested and charged with illegal possession of ammunition and unauthorised explosives and will soon appear in the Hopetown Magistrates’ court. SAPS will continue unabatedly to tighten the grip on crime during the festive season. The police are urging the public to continue to provide information regarding criminal activities.”
