KIMBERLEY. – Kagisho Dante Sonyoni (26), the new executive mayor of the Sol Plaatje municipality, was sworn in during an inauguration ceremony yesterday.

Mayor still a student

Sonyoni is a Sol Plaatje University lecturer and a Masters in Economics student.

In his speech, Sonyoni called on newly elected councilors to set aside their personal and political interests.

“I want to urge and challenge all councilors not to use matters of service delivery to our people as a political tool to achieve cheap political mileage.

“While I may have had the honor of leading this institution, it is only by working together in a collaborative way that we can achieve significant success as an institution and overcome obstacles that can be thrown our way.

“Through the oath we have all committed ourselves to be of service to the people of the municipality, to put their interests first and to ensure that we abide by the laws of the country and protect its Constitution.”
