“This was not a terrorist event,” said Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson on Monday, one day after an SUV rammed into bystanders and participants at a Christmas parade in the Milwaukee suburb.

“We are confident he acted alone,” he added, referencing the driver and prime suspect in the case.

The suspect that was apprehended on Sunday was named as Darrell Brooks Jr. (39), he will be charged with intentional homicide. And further charges could be added based on the investigation.

Brooks was known to police after a slew of assault and endangerment charges, including a previous incident where a woman said he had attempted to run her over in a gas station.

According to the local media, Brooks had been released from prison on bail for other charges on Friday. Police Chief Thompson further elaborated that Brooks had been part of a domestic disturbance only minutes before he drove into the Christmas parade.

At least five people were killed and over 48 people were injured when Brooks drove into the Christmas parade. Doctors said that 18 patients between the ages of 3 and 16 were taken to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital, among them three sets of siblings. Six of the children remain in critical condition.

The victims named on Monday were:

  • Mr Wilhelm Hospel, 81
  • Ms Virginia Sorenson, 79
  • Ms LeAnna Owen, 71
  • Ms Tamara Durand, 52
  • Ms Jane Kulich, 52

They include members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, who are a regular fixture in the city’s parades.

“Our group was doing what they loved, performing in front of crowds in a parade putting smiles on faces of all ages,” the group wrote in a statement on Facebook. “Those who died were extremely passionate Grannies.”

A community fund has been created to help victims of the incident.
