Severe thunderstorms, fire danger and a heat wave expected Monday

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms that are expected on Monday afternoon over the southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, most parts of the Free State, North West, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape.

These thunderstorms are expected to result in localized flooding in places, strong damaging winds and large amounts of small hail.

The following warnings were also issued:

  • A yellow level 1 warning for disruptive rain leading to localized flooding is expected over most parts of the Eastern Cape
  • Extreme fire danger warnings are expected over the south-western parts of the North West, north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, north-western parts of the Free State and in Limpopo.
  • A heat wave is also expected in the lowveld, Limpopo Valley and Mpumalanga.
