Mmusi Maimane, former DA leader and current One SA movement leader, has hit back at his successor John Steenhuisen and told him to stop accusing him of being responsible for the decline of support for the DA.
“The benchmark is not 2016, the benchmark is the last election (national election). You have 20.7 % of the votes in the last election. We were happy with growth, consolidation and progress from the DA from that election. We came out of that election with a leader having walked off the job. It’s very few parties in the world that survive that,” Steenhuisen said.
Maimane said that Steenhuisen must focus on the party’s poor showing instead of blaming him as he had left the party in better shape. He added that the numbers were there to show that there was no massive drop in support during his time.
“Keep my name out of it @jsteenhuisen. You made your bed, these results are on you,” wrote Maimane on Twitter. “In 2016 I delivered growth. That’s the bottom line. Numbers don’t lie, check the scoreboard,” Maimane told Steenhuisen.
Maimane, who had left the DA in 2019 after being blamed for the poor showing, said that his track record speaks for itself. Steenhuisen succeeded Maimane.
The IEC has said that it will announce the results by Thursday.
